Market Structure — BOS vs MSS/CHoCH
BOS continues the trend; MSS/CHoCH is the U-turn signal. The difference decides everything downstream.
A Break of Structure (BOS) is a candle BODY closing beyond the most recent swing point in the direction of the prevailing trend — continuation. A wick-only poke is not a BOS; it is a sweep candidate, and that distinction is critical.
A Market Structure Shift (MSS) — called Change of Character (CHoCH) in SMC circles, and a core lesson on Talaria Trade — is the first body close through the opposing swing AGAINST the trend, ideally through the very low or high that produced the latest extreme.
A quality MSS wants displacement and a fresh FVG on the breaking leg, and it is strongest when the extreme it reverses from just swept liquidity. Sweep, then shift: that sequence is the core ICT reversal confirmation.
How to trade it
- Track trend state from the swing map: rising intermediate highs and lows = uptrend, and BOS events confirm it is intact.
- Wait for the MSS before trading reversals — the sweep alone is not permission to enter.
- Demand displacement on the shift; a limp CHoCH without energy is frequently a fake.
Pitfalls
- Counting wick breaks as structure breaks — only body closes count.
- Trading every CHoCH on a low timeframe against a strong HTF trend.
- Forgetting to update the protected swing after each BOS — your invalidation trails with structure.
