Learn Time Midnight Open & 8:30 Open
Midnight Open & 8:30 Open
The algorithm’s day starts at 00:00 NY — that opening price is the day’s fair reference.
ICT anchors the trading day to the midnight New York open — the "true day" open. On days engineered to close higher, price is typically pushed BELOW the midnight open first (the discount dip); bearish days pop above it before selling off.
The 08:30 open is the second anchor: the economic-news release time that resets the intraday reference just before the NY session program begins. The 09:30 equity open adds a third for index traders.
Together they give a simple positional read: with bullish bias, price under the midnight open in London or early NY is a gift zone, not a reason for panic.
How to trade it
- Draw the 00:00 and 08:30 open lines every day and judge price as above/below fair reference.
- With bullish bias, hunt longs below the midnight open (and shorts above it when bearish).
Pitfalls
- Buying far above the midnight open on a bullish day — you are paying premium against the day’s reference.
- Forgetting these anchors reset daily; yesterday’s open lines are stale context.
